The recent history of Iran - heir to one of the most ancient civilisations of history: the Persian Empire - is one of dramatic developments. When the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadeq nationalised Iranian oil in the fifties, the CIA cooked up a coup to get rid of him For the 25 years of Reza Shah's dictatorship, Iran was a trusty ally of the US, until a popular rising brought him down in 1979. Thereupon the ayatollahs succeeded in gaining power and turning Iran into an Islamic Republic. Why was it that Washington was unable to digest that? And what about the recent thaw in relations between Iran and the West: what brought about this change of course?

De recente geschiedenis van Iran - erfgenaam van een van de oudste beschavingen ter wereld: het Perzische Rijk - is er één van dramatische ontwikkelingen. Toen de democratisch verkozen Mohammad Mossadeq in de jaren 1950 de Iraanse olie nationaliseerde, bekokstoofde de CIA een staatsgreep om hem uit het zadel te lichten. Onder de dictatuur van Reza Shah was Iran 25 jaar lang een trouwe bondgenoot van de VS. Tot een volksopstand hem in 1979 ten val bracht. Daarop slaagden de ayatollahs erin de macht te grijpen en van Iran een Islamitische Republiek te maken. Hoe komt het dat Washington dat niet kon verteren? En wat met de recente dooi in de relaties tussen Iran en het Westen: vanwaar die koerswijziging?
